The middle of August is the best time to look at NFL futures betting markets now that the 2024 season is less than a month away. After your friends at Betting News looked at the Offensive Player of the Year race the other day, it's time to look at how the Defensive Player of the Year picture is forming up.

Last year's award was won by Cleveland Browns protective end Myles Garrett, who had the most dominant performance of his profession. Only 3 players have won the DPOY award in back-to-back seasons, though, leaving time to inform if Garrett will be the fourth to sign up with the list.

In the meantime, let's look at the most recent 2024 NFL Defensive Player of the Year awards, along with two of my predictions and a dark horse pick.

NFL Defensive Player of the Year Predictions

Just like with the other day's OPOY picks, my 2024 NFL Defensive Player of the Year forecasts will include 2 picks that I'm quite positive in, in addition to a dark horse selection.

Micah Parsons (+550 )

The wagering favorite doesn't always take home the gold, but it's difficult to refute Micah Parsons in this scenario.

The Dallas Cowboys super star has been an elite presence in the Lone Star State ever because being drafted 12th total in 2021. During the last 3 seasons, Parsons ranks fourth among his peers with 40.5 sacks and just tape-recorded a career-high total of 14.0 in 2015.

It also isn't just Cowboys fans who are hyping up the 25-year-old game-changer. Parsons' accolade list is currently rather lengthy as it includes three Pro Bowl appearances, a trio of All-Pro nods, and the 2021 Defensive Rookie of the Year award. That's without pointing out how he's finished third or much better in the DPOY race each season.

Now that he's poised to enter his prime this fall, I won't be surprised if Parsons seals himself as the NFL's No. 1 defender.

Maxx Crosby (+700 )

Las Vegas Raiders DE Maxx Crosby is another gamer who continues to improve with each passing year.

The previous Eastern Michigan item is coming off a remarkable 2023 campaign that saw him tally a career-high 14.5 sacks while also pacing leagues in lost yardage deals with (23) for the 2nd consecutive project. Not just was the showcase enough to earn his third straight Pro Bowl nod, but it also landed him 4th in the DPOY voting.

Let's likewise not forget that Crosby is cherished by analytic specialists. The 26-year-old DE ended up last season as Pro Football Focus' No. 4 edge protector with an overall grade of 92.1. If that wasn't outstanding enough, his 92.7 run defense grade was the top mark among 112 eligible players at his position.

What also benefits Crosby's DPOY outlook is the Raiders' lackluster attack. Crosby will see a lot of opportunities to make his case for this award if the offense can't stay on the field. Considering how he's only improving with age, it may be best to catch his present odds before they escalate when the routine season starts.

NFL DPOY Dark Horse: Montez Sweat (+3300 )

Although one of the favorites tends to win this award, spraying some cash on a dark horse never harmed anybody. That's why I suggest keeping an eye on Chicago Bears DE Montez Sweat.

Sweta started the 2023 NFL season with the Washington Commanders, however, he was delivered off to the Bears ahead of the trade due date. By the time the season ended, the ex-2019 first-rounder had generated a career-high 12.5 sacks with 38 solo takes on, 4 protected passes, and three forced fumbles in 17 games. The personal-best efficiency was great enough to see him earn his first-ever Pro Bowl election.

Not only is Sweat growing, but his arrival is a huge reason that Chicago had one of the finest defenses in the 2nd half. After all, the Bears went from permitting 27.3 points per game before the trade to a league-leading 17.9 PPG in the 9 contests following the playmaking defender's arrival.
